Will’s Watchlist: Theatrical Release

Zootopia 2 (2025)
Directed by Jared Bush and Byron Howard
[Rated PG] 1hr 48min
★★★★½

Zootopia 2 is an animated family adventure comedy film about two cops who go rogue in order to solve a major case that could completely change the recognized history of Zootopia. As they’re pursued by the police, Nick and Judy are aided by marginalized communities who help them learn about the true nature of the city’s creation, which those in power have tried to keep hidden for almost a century.

This film perfectly balances its entertainment for younger audiences with its strong themes and commentary on real world issues. The script is filled with hilarious jokes and visual gags that center around actual animal characteristics, and they’re smartly incorporated in ways that also enhance the narrative. The story itself utilizes the absence of reptiles from the first Zootopia movie to highlight the systematic oppression of marginalized groups when larger forces want to take over their land. This directly parallels the historical and ongoing ethnic cleansings that colonizers and settlers have committed in order to expand the land they control, which makes for a compelling narrative that’s relevant to current events and is important for all audiences to see. The film’s exceptional animation is just the icing on the cake, as the fully realized animal world feels completely alive and is incredibly convincing with its many tiny details that accurately represent every animal it depicts. The natural chemistry between the two protagonists is also a major highlight since their interactions with each other are immensely engaging and entertaining throughout the film.

I highly recommend Zootopia 2 to anyone interested in a fun family movie with great messages that both kids and adults can learn from, as it emphasizes the importance of doing whatever you can to improve society so that everyone can benefit regardless of their background. Overall, this is one of the best animated films of the year, and it’s by far the best sequel ever produced by Disney.
