A Minecraft Movie is a family adventure comedy film based on the Minecraft video game. It’s about a man named Steve who travels to the Minecraft Overworld and inadvertently gets four others trapped there. Together, they go on a quest to get back to their own world while also trying to stop the piglins from taking over the Overworld in the process.
This is a very bizarre movie that isn’t good at all, but it can still be quite entertaining at times. Jack Black overly commits to his role and gives an excessive over-the-top performance throughout the entire film which does provide some ironic enjoyment even though it isn’t that compelling. The film itself is generally aware of how ridiculous it is and heavily leans into it in some areas, such as the CGI creatures which are made to look oddly realistic while retaining most of their blocky appearance. However, the overall poor quality of the visual effects stands out a lot, which can sometimes be amusing, but it ends up just making the movie look bad most of the time. The film’s biggest shortcoming, though, is its extremely shallow and generic story. It has general themes involving creativity and not fitting in, but the narrative hardly touches upon them and doesn’t explore anything beyond the surface level. Most of the film just explains and showcases certain aspects of Minecraft rather than using them to enhance the story.
Although it’s the biggest and most successful domestic movie of the year so far, I only recommend A Minecraft Movie to children who enjoy playing Minecraft, as the only value it has is seeing various elements from the game adapted onto the big screen. The film doesn’t have anything substantial to offer, and all of its Minecraft components are merely superficial influences on the overall aesthetic, but it can still be entertaining for people who do enjoy those aspects of the movie.
