Will’s Watchlist: Theatrical Release
Elio is an animated family sci-fi adventure film about a lonely boy who struggles with forming relationships and dreams of being taken away to the stars. When he’s finally abducted by aliens, Elio pretends to be the leader of Earth, which leads him on a journey of self discovery that teaches him how to develop bonds with others.
This is a very heartwarming movie with a solid story and great themes that both children and adults can relate to. The animation and voice acting are excellent, and the overall concept is very entertaining. The plot itself is quite predictable, however, as it follows familiar formulas and tropes that can be found in many other films. This prevents the movie from becoming a wholly unique experience, but the way the story is presented is original enough to make it feel fresh and new. While it doesn’t quite reach the level of Pixar’s more notable films, this movie still provides an enjoyable and worthwhile experience for the whole family.
I recommend Elio to anyone who enjoys Pixar films and especially to children and their families. It truly is a family film, as its core elements center around the connections between children and their guardians, so it’s a great option for families looking to watch a movie at the theater together. Among all the recent remakes, adaptations, and sequels made for kids, this original story stands out as a breath of fresh air and deserves to be seen on the big screen.
Elio is now playing in theaters. Click here to watch its Final Trailer.
