The Iron Giant is an animated family sci-fi film about a boy who discovers a giant alien robot in the woods near his house. While trying to keep his existence a secret, the boy teaches the giant how to be a good person and helps him adjust to living on Earth.
This is a fairly standard family film, yet it utilizes all of its elements remarkably well. From the animation to the narrative, each aspect is effectively refined to create a simple but compelling story that clearly illustrates the significance of courage and kindness. The themes and messages are explicitly conveyed throughout the film repeatedly, which can feel tiresome at times, but this also contributes to the film’s charm as well. While the movie doesn’t excel in any particular area, it also doesn’t lack anything essential either, so it’s a very solid film all around.
I primarily recommend The Iron Giant for younger audiences, but it can also be enjoyed by anyone interested in it’s simple, nostalgic nature. The film doesn’t offer anything new or challenging, but it does provide a pleasant and heartwarming movie experience.
The Iron Giant is available to buy or rent on digital platforms.
