One Battle After Another is an action dark comedy political thriller about the family of an ex-revolutionary being hunted down by the US military. Former members of the revolutionary group must work together once again in order to protect the family as white supremacists come after them.

This film is nothing short of a masterpiece, and it’s easily the best movie of the year so far. It sets out to do so much and fully succeeds in every aspect from its story and themes to its cinematography and editing. There isn’t just one standout element because everything about this film is absolutely phenomenal. Leonardo DiCaprio gives an incredible performance as the lead actor, and Sean Penn is insanely compelling as the main villain. Chase Infiniti is fantastic in her first film role as well and effortlessly holds her own when acting alongside her award-winning co-stars. In addition, the film’s themes are completely on point and incredibly relevant to the current political climate in the United States. It directly confronts the government’s anti-immigration efforts, the growing power and influence of white supremacists, and the barbaric tactics used by law enforcement and military officers against US citizens. Overall, it’s very refreshing to see a film narrative that’s so explicitly antifascist and pulls no punches against the pervasive bigotry in this country while also being presented through exceptional filmmaking all around.

One Battle After Another has my highest recommendation, and I strongly encourage everyone to watch it. It offers an incredible cinematic experience filled with high tension, exciting action, and goofy comedy that all mixes together perfectly. The film also has excellent pacing that makes it fly by despite having a fairly long runtime. It’s remarkably gripping the whole way through and should definitely be seen on the big screen if possible.
