Companion (2025)

Directed by Drew Hancock
[Rated R] 1hr 37min
★★★★

Companion is a sci-fi horror thriller about a group of friends who spend the weekend together at a remote location in the middle of nowhere, but things suddenly go terribly wrong when an unexpected situation occurs. With many twists and turns, nothing turns out to be what it seemed.

This is an incredibly unpredictable film that repeatedly changes its direction and tone as the events unfold and more information is revealed. Not only are the twists highly intriguing, but the narrative itself creates a compelling story that effectively uses the twists to expand on the film’s themes. It also balances its tones exceptionally well, as it easily shifts between serious and comedic moments. All of the horror and thriller elements are great in general, and everything comes together really well by the end. It’s difficult to mention anything else without giving too much away, which can sometimes indicate a weaker story, but this movie doesn’t rely on its surprises to carry the film or keep it engaging; instead, they enhance an already excellent experience and steer the story in new, inventive directions.

I recommend Companion to anyone who enjoys horror thrillers and likes going into movies completely blind. Knowing some of the major plot details won’t significantly impact the viewing experience because of the strong overall narrative, but not knowing anything substantial about the story or its twists does intensify the thrilling atmosphere and unpredictability of the film.
