Perfect Days is a drama film about a toilet cleaner who lives his life moment by moment and tries to appreciate the little details that only exist for brief periods of time. However, each day comes with new disruptions to his routine that he must navigate through in order to maintain his content lifestyle.
This is an incredibly beautiful film that highlights the small but significant moments in life that often go unnoticed or are unappreciated. Koji Yakusho’s phenomenal performance as Hirayama creates the emotional core of the film with minimal dialogue, and his interactions with the other characters really emphasizes how special any interaction can be even if they seem inconsequential at first. In addition, both the soundtrack and cinematography further elevate the impact of the narrative by tying directly into the film’s themes and framing each scene through Hirayama’s mindful perspective. Overall, this film provides a wonderful experience that is sure to leave a profound and lasting impression.
I highly recommend Perfect Days to anyone who enjoys slower, contemplative films that explore meaningful aspects of life. The story exhibits so much warmth and empathy, and it brilliantly showcases how everyone can appreciate life’s fleeting moments no matter what their circumstances are.
