Will’s Watchlist: Theatrical Release
28 Years Later: The Bone Temple is a post-apocalyptic horror film and the 4th entry in the 28 Days Later film series. It picks up right after the ending of the previous film, 28 Years Later, and it follows the stories of Spike, as he unwillingly travels with Jimmy’s brutal gang, and Dr. Kelson, as he experiments with reducing the effects of the Rage Virus. While Spike witnesses the total barbarity of Jimmy and his followers, Dr. Kelson uncovers the underlying humanity in his zombie patient.
This is a wild movie that goes all in on its premise, focusing on both the cruelty of humanity and the harmony between living beings through its use of horrific imagery and beautiful emotional beats. The special effects are so gruesome and realistic that it can be hard to watch at times, but this also enhances the experience by highlighting the narrative’s themes and strengthening them. In addition, the performances from Ralph Fiennes and Jack O’Connell are spectacular and, along with Nia DaCosta’s excellent direction, elevate the film far beyond the standard horror movie. It also creates the most fully realized iteration of the series’ post-apocalyptic world, and the excellent characters make the setting highly compelling. Overall, this is a film of extremes that’s incredibly enjoyable to watch while also offering a deeper commentary about human nature.
I recommend 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple to anyone who likes unique and insane horror films as well as the previous 28 Days Later movies. Although this film goes in a very different direction from the others, it brilliantly expands on the overall narrative of the series and can still stand on its own as a singular movie experience.
