A Different Man (2024)
Directed by Aaron Schimberg
[Rated R] 1hr 52min
★★★★★

A Different Man is a dark comedy thriller about a man who struggles to get roles as an actor due to his genetic condition that causes benign tumors to grow on his face. When given the opportunity to participate in experimental medical treatment that would heal his disfigurement, he decides to go through with it and ends up looking like a completely different person. However, now that his appearance is exactly what he wanted, he still has to deal with his own shortcomings and must confront new issues that have arisen due to his unique situation.

Not only is this film incredibly funny, but it also thoroughly explores themes of identity and insecurity while directly examining societal issues about the stigmatization of people with disabilities and medical conditions. This is especially notable because movies almost always prioritize good-looking able-bodied actors, yet this film stars Adam Pearson, a man with neurofibromatosis tumors on his face, in a leading role alongside Sebastian Stan and Renate Reinsve. As a result, the story is able to critically examine how people with visible disfigurements are treated in the entertainment industry as well as within the fictional narratives it creates about them. Every aspect of the film is excellent, from the acting and writing to the cinematography and editing, which further contributes to creating an excellent overall experience. With its meta commentary, humor, and fantastic performances by Pearson and Stan, this film is incredibly engaging and tells a compelling story that highlights important topics that can have significant impacts on anyone’s life.

I highly recommend A Different Man to everyone, and especially to those who enjoy dark comedy films with absurdist humor. It’s so refreshing to see a movie involving people who are often ignored in media that actively confronts the discrimination, tokenism, and exploitation they encounter while also delving deeper into the personal elements that shape an individual’s perception of themself and others. Additionally, this film received a nomination for this year’s Academy Award for Best Makeup and Hairstyling.
