Will’s Watchlist: Theatrical Release

Bugonia (2025)
Directed by Yorgos Lanthimos
[Rated R] 1hr 58min
★★★★½

Bugonia is a dark comedy crime film about two conspiracy theorists who kidnap the CEO of a pharmaceutical company because they believe she is an alien trying to control the human population. Despite her best attempts to convince them otherwise, they keep her locked away as they try to negotiate a peace agreement that they think will save the planet from destruction.

This is a hilarious film that makes fun of conspiracy theories while also deconstructing the underlying issues that bring those absurd ideas into people’s minds. It explicitly calls out major factors that have contributed to an increase in reactionary conspiracies that distract people from the real causes of society’s problems. As a result, the film also highlights the systemic exploitation of workers that corporate executives facilitate in order to maximize their profits over the health and safety of the people who work for them. These themes are strengthened by the incredible screenplay, as the sharp writing effectively communicates the film’s messages through its engaging dialogue and comedic moments. The acting is fantastic as well, with both Emma Stone and Jesse Plemons giving compelling performances that really ground this bizarre narrative in reality. All of the film’s elements brilliantly come together in both satisfying and unexpected ways that make this a very fun yet thought-provoking experience.

I highly recommend Bugonia to anyone who enjoys weird dark comedies and other Yorgos Lanthimos films such as Poor Things and The Favorite. It’s incredibly relevant to the current socioeconomic climate in the US, as it effectively demonstrates just how absurd people’s beliefs can be and how far they will go in order to convince themselves that they are right, and it accurately showcases how people in power will abuse their influence and resources in order to benefit themselves at any cost.

Bugonia is now playing in theaters. Click here to watch the Official Trailer.
