Will’s Watchlist: Theatrical Release
Wicked: For Good is a musical fantasy film that adapts Act II of the 2003 Broadway musical. It takes place some time after Wicked, as Elphaba is now fighting to free the enslaved animals and defend them from the Wizard of Oz. Meanwhile, the Wizard uses Glinda to spread his propaganda against the animals and Elphaba, calling her the Wicked Witch of the West, but Glinda has doubts about her role and questions whether or not she’s making the right choice by going against her best friend in order to achieve her own personal desires.
While this film doesn’t quite live up to the previous one, it’s still an immensely enjoyable experience with a satisfying conclusion to the story. All the musical performances are great, and the two new songs made for this movie add a lot of depth and insight to the main characters and their choices. As a result, the themes of wanting to do good for others comes to the forefront of the narrative and strengthens the significance of Elphaba’s decision to expose the Wizard’s lies as well as her attempts to topple his regime in order to liberate the inhabitants of Oz. The film also serves as an excellent counterpart to The Wizard of Oz (1939), as it shows the story from a completely different perspective with the added context of Oz’s history and politics that leads to the situation Dorothy finds herself in when she arrives. As with the previous film, the set design and costumes are exceptional and make the Ozian world feel alive with its visually stunning appearance.
I recommend Wicked: For Good to everyone who enjoyed Wicked and want to see the story continue. It provides a fantastic experience at the theater with its incredible visuals and music, so seeing the musical numbers on the big screen is absolutely spectacular.
