Will’s Watchlist: Theatrical Release

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (2024)
Directed by Jeff Fowler
[Rated PG] 1hr 50min
★★

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is an action/adventure comedy film based on a video game series, and it continues the story of the first two Sonic the Hedgehog films. After escaping from an underground lab, Shadow the Hedgehog seeks revenge on those who have contained him there for decades. Team Sonic is called upon to stop him, but they need to work with their old enemy, Dr. Robotnik, in order to succeed, as the fate of the entire world is at stake.

This is a fairly standard family film that will be less enjoyable for those who aren’t fans of the Sonic franchise. It’s not as generic as the previous two movies because it incorporates more elements from the video games, but this also causes the film to be much messier and less focused. It also contains some of the same major issues that are present in the other films, such as flat and irritating characters, unfunny humor, and a dull narrative. However, this film does shine with its use of VFX, as the colorful visuals look spectacular on the big screen. While the action itself isn’t very engaging, the appearance and quality of the CGI during the action scenes is fantastic, and it remains effective throughout the entire film.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 doesn’t have a lot to offer for general audiences, but I do recommend it for children and fans of the franchise. As most of the humor is geared toward younger viewers, adults may not find it to be very enjoyable, but people who are already fans of Sonic and its associated elements will definitely enjoy seeing many familiar aspects from the games in this movie.
