How to Make a Killing (2026)
Directed by John Patton Ford
[Rated R] 1hr 45min
★★★★

How to Make a Killing is a dark comedy thriller about a man whose mother was completely cut off from from her wealthy family before he was born, forcing him to grow up in poverty. In order to claim the inheritance he deserves, he sets out to make himself the family’s sole heir by killing all the other descendant.

This is an incredibly fun film that primarily relies on its strong premise to keep the story engaging. While the overall narrative is a little weak, it’s still very entertaining to watch someone murder extremely rich people in creative and humorous ways. The family members he targets each showcase different ways in which the wealthy plague our society, and the film doesn’t shy away from demonstrating how some of them can seem like nice people on the outside while still exploiting others and abusing their positions of power. Glen Powell is as charismatic as ever in his role, and Margaret Qualley is a scene stealer as usual. Together, their characters do a great job at highlighting how wealth can corrupt anyone and the length people can go to increase it. Despite this, however, the themes are a bit shallow since the film doesn’t really add anything substantial to its narrative beyond simply portraying the issues of wealth that exist in capitalist societies, so it mostly offers a lighter movie experience that doesn’t delve deeply into its major topics.

I recommend How to Make a Killing to anyone who enjoys dark comedies and thrillers. It’s very easy to watch and remains entertaining despite its narrative shortcomings. The film is definitely worth seeing at the theater for something that’s light and fun, as it doesn’t require much active attention while watching it.
