Train Dreams is a period drama set in the early 20th century about a lumberjack who takes various temporary jobs to make a living, including railroad construction. However, this lifestyle requires him to leave his wife and child for extended periods of time, and he remains haunted by certain things he’s witnessed while away from home.
This is easily one of the most beautiful films of the year. Its cinematography is absolutely stunning as every shot is picturesque with incredible framing, and its narrative is poignantly affecting with its melancholic yet hopeful story. This film is a perfect example of how cinematography can influence a story, as it both enhances the beautiful moments and juxtaposes itself with the somber ones to a powerful degree. Joel Edgerton also gives a fantastic performance with his restrained portrayal of a humble worker who does his best to navigate the circumstances he finds himself in. Overall, this film provides a magnificent experience that explores the wondrous and tragic aspects of human life.
I recommend Train Dreams to anyone who enjoys slow, contemplative films filled with emotion. It’s melancholic beauty is highly captivating and offers a powerful presentation of its themes along with the incredible cinematography. This film has also been nominated for four Academy Awards, which include Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Cinematography, and Best Original Song.
