Paddington in Peru is a family adventure comedy film about a talking bear who travels to Peru with his human family to visit his aunt at the Home for Retired Bears. However, things take an unexpected turn when Aunt Lucy suddenly goes missing before Paddington and the Browns arrive, which leads them on a quest to solve the mystery and bring Aunt Lucy home.
This is a fun and enjoyable movie that doesn’t quite live up to the first two films. It still has the same endearing charm as them, but it doesn’t fully utilize the strengths of Paddington’s character in its narrative. Rather than focusing on Paddington’s positive impact on people and their communities, the plot instead revolves around a quest through the jungle while solving mysteries along the way. While this story is very entertaining at times and has some genuinely touching moments, it relies too heavily on tropes and cliches found in similar movies, which ultimately makes it a fairly generic jungle adventure with a bit of Paddington charm. Olivia Coleman’s performance as the Reverend Mother is easily the highlight of the film as she’s absolutely hilarious in this role, and it’s incredibly difficult to not smile every time she’s on screen. Overall, this is an entertaining film that simply provides a good time without having much more to offer.
I recommend Paddington in Peru to anyone who enjoyed the previous films and want a fun, lighthearted movie experience. It can still be entertaining without knowing the context from Paddington and Paddington 2, but both are definitely worth watching as they are fantastic films, and they enhance the overall story of this movie as well.
