Project Hail Mary (2026)
Directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller
[Rated PG-13] 2hr 36min
★★★★

Project Hail Mary is a sci-fi adventure film about an amnesiac astronaut who finds himself on a mission to save Earth after waking up alone on a spaceship. As his memories slowly return, he forms an unlikely friendship that may help him succeed in his mission.

This is an incredibly enjoyable film that can pretty much elicit one’s entire emotional range. It’s intriguing, funny, exciting, heartwarming, devastating, and so much more. These emotional elements are definitely the highlight of the film, and Ryan Gosling’s performance really sells them as he fully commits to his character. The visual effects and production design are phenomenal and really enhance the overall experience by making the environments feel real and tactile as they work together seamlessly. Aside from some wonky editing in certain places, all the other aspects of the film are still very good, but they just don’t stand out as much as the visuals. While the runtime does start to feel a little long by the end, the story is so engaging that it it remains entertaining the whole way through.

I highly recommend Project Hail Mary to anyone who enjoys space adventure films such as Interstellar (2014), The Martian (2015), and Sunshine (2007). This movie blends together many elements from each of those films, and even a some from Arrival (2016), so it’s sure to provide an entertaining experience to those who want to watch something similar. It also adds its own unique aspects that set it apart, so it’s still worth checking out for anyone interested in a fresh take on the familiar elements of sci-fi adventures.
