Will’s Watchlist: Theatrical Release
Mickey 17 is a sci-fi dark comedy film about an expendable worker who is given dangerous and fatal jobs on a space expedition. Every time he dies, a new clone is produced with all of his previous memories intact, forcing him to continue working in many terrible conditions that are demanded by the colony’s leadership.
This is an incredibly funny film with strong social commentary on worker exploitation, political corruption, and xenophobia. It’s very upfront and direct with its politics, which pairs really well with its highly comedic tone. As a result, the film is able to effectively balance its exaggerated scenarios and characters with its darker concepts and sincere messaging. In addition, Robert Pattinson is fantastic in his roles as various Mickeys; the main versions of his character seem like completely different people while still maintaining similar characteristics between them. The supporting cast is great all around as well, and they really commit to the over the top absurdity of everything while also keeping their performances relatively grounded when needed. Overall, this crazy story is very entertaining with great characters and intriguing concepts that make the film highly engaging and thought-provoking.
I recommend Mickey 17 to anyone who enjoys sci-fi films and is drawn to the overall style of this movie. It’s a very weird and unique experience, so not everyone may find it enjoyable, but its themes and ideas are so compelling that it’s worth checking out if any aspect of the movie seems interesting.
