The Prestige (2006)
Directed by Christopher Nolan
[Rated PG-13] 2hr 10min
★★★★½

The Prestige is a period psychological thriller set in the early 20th century about two magicians trying to outdo each other with their magic performances. As their tricks become more impressive, their rivalry only intensifies and increasingly consumes their lives, which puts themselves and the people around them in danger.

With a filmography as impressive as Christopher Nolan’s, it can be easy to overlook this film among massive hits such as Oppenheimer, Inception, and the Dark Knight trilogy. However, The Prestige still remains one of his best films, as it offers a brilliant narrative full of exciting twists and turns that heighten the intensity without being cheap or superfluous. The film itself is even structured like a magic trick, as the characters’ descriptions of magic acts also apply to how the movie’s own story is presented. As a result, the film indirectly provides metacommentary on cinema as a whole and examines its relationship to both filmmakers and audiences. Additionally, the entire cast is fantastic with incredibly compelling performances from every actor. Everything in this movie feels remarkably realistic even with its light science fiction elements, as the core elements and themes remain genuine and grounded throughout the entire film.

I highly recommend The Prestige to everyone, especially those who enjoy Nolan’s other films. It’s constantly engaging with its excellent narrative and characters, and every single moment is crucial to the overall story. The film also provides a very different experience upon watching it for a second time, as the answers to the mysteries are so mind-blowing that they can completely change how the movie is perceived.

The Prestige is currently available to stream on Hulu. Click here to watch the trailer.
