In this sequel to the TV series The Mandalorian, the New Republic sends the Mandalorian and Grogu on a mission to capture a former commander of the Galactic Empire. In order to achieve their goal, they must overcome various obstacles, such as rescuing the son of Jabba the Hut from his kidnappers in exchange for information about the commander’s whereabouts.
Unfortunately, this is easily the worst film in the Star Wars franchise. While some people may disagree with certain narrative choices in the more recent movies, they’re still undeniably fun and entertaining experiences overall. However, the same can’t be said about this latest entry. This film is so afraid to make any strong narrative decisions that it plays everything way too safe, so much so that nothing remotely interesting happens at all, so the entire experience feels like such a slog to get through. As the movie continued to drag on while I was watching it, I checked the time at one point to see how much longer was left and realized that I wasn’t even an hour into it. When the movie finally ended, it felt like I had been there for over three hours. The story is just so dull, the action is very basic, and the characters are completely uninteresting. Even the performances and voice acting are pretty low-effort for the most part. Despite this, one aspect that actually works well is Grogu himself, otherwise known as “Baby Yoda” to the general public. His humorous interactions with the Mandalorian are highly amusing and fit perfectly with the rest of the comedic elements in the Star Wars franchise, and the phenomenal puppetry really brings him to life. All of this applies to the Anzellan characters as well, and their scenes together with Grogu are by far the best parts of the movie. The fantastic music is also one of the few highlights that makes this film at least a somewhat bearable experience. Although the foundational elements of a solid Star Wars movie are present within this film, the story and its execution don’t utilize them in any effective manner, so the end result feels like a pale imitation of better Star Wars media that has come before it.
I only recommend The Mandalorian and Grogu to Star Wars fans who want to keep up with the franchise’s latest installments, but because it has such a basic story, anyone can watch it without having seen any prior TV episodes of The Mandalorian. Overall, this film doesn’t have much to offer other than bringing the Star Wars universe back to the big screen after a seven year absence, so it’s not really worth watching for anyone who isn’t heavily invested in the franchise.
