Will’s Watchlist: Theatrical Release
Mortal Kombat II is an action fantasy film based on the Mortal Kombat video game franchise and is a sequel to Mortal Kombat (2021). When aging action movie star Johnny Cage is summoned to fight for Earthrealm in the Mortal Kombat tournament, he must fight alongside humanity’s best fighters in order to stop the ruthless Shao Kahn of Outworld from taking over Earthrealm as the latest step in his plan to control every realm.
This is a film that really makes an effort to address the feedback received from the previous installment, for better and for worse. Rather than trying to form a compelling narrative, it mostly focuses on cool fights that are well choreographed with lots of gory imagery. The action is easily the highlight of the film, as the fighting sequences between classic Mortal Kombat characters are very exciting, and the incredibly high stakes are effectively conveyed by killing off major characters with spectacular fatalities. However, the story doesn’t create much emotional investment for any of the characters due to its shallow narrative. It also doesn’t improve upon the narrative shortcomings of the first film and instead completely neglects important aspects of that initial storyline. This ends up making the movie feel very cobbled together and disconnected from the previous entry, so the overall experience doesn’t feel particularly satisfying despite its amazing action scenes.
I recommend Mortal Kombat II primarily to fans of the franchise but also to anyone who wants to see a movie with many violent, riveting fights. The cast is great at accurately representing the characters on the big screen, so it’s fun to see them interact with each other in ways that remain authentic to the games.
