Will’s Watchlist: Theatrical Release

“These companies think they can do whatever they want. We’re sick of it.”

After years of using faulty Acme products that have failed to help him catch the Road Runner, Wile E. Coyote finally resorts to taking legal action against the company. However, this unintentionally leads him and his timid lawyer down a path that causes them to uncover a sinister plot going on behind the scenes at the Acme corporation.

This movie really nails its important themes and messages that are extremely relevant to the current state of corporatocracy in the United States, yet its overall execution fails to fully do them justice. Although the story itself is very original, the plot beats are fairly typical for a standard Hollywood film, so it tends to get a bit dull at various points throughout the narrative. Additionally, the comedy isn’t particularly entertaining as it mainly utilizes many of the familiar cartoon tropes that audiences have become accustomed to, but this also can be a positive for viewers who do enjoy this type of humor and want to see more of it. The 3D animation is another major element that doesn’t work very well since it mostly looks cheap and unfinished. There are occasional moments with traditional 2D animation that look fantastic, but it also illustrates just how weak the 3D animation is by comparison and highlights how off-putting it can be. But despite all this, the core of the film and its story provide a fantastic general criticism of the ridiculous amount of power that corporations have in our politics and legislation, as well as touching upon other significant issues like late-stage capitalism and animal cruelty, which the film does effectively convey through its narrative.

I recommend Coyote vs. Acme to anyone who enjoys Looney Tunes cartoons and wants to see the characters in a very different kind of story with the same style of humor. It’s also important to note that Warner Bros. initially tried to bury this film as a tax write off three years ago even though it had already been completed, but luckily they were convinced to sell it to another distributor last year, which is why it’s finally being released now. This unintentionally plays into the themes of the film itself, and it ends up making the story even stronger as a result.
