War of the Worlds is a screenlife sci-fi thriller and modern adaptation of the 1898 novel of the same name. It follows a US homeland security officer who spies on American civilians when aliens suddenly invade the planet. With access to every electronic device in the country, he tries to balance keeping his family safe while also dealing with the alien threat.
This movie is a complete disaster of filmmaking, yet it’s hilariously entertaining to watch. Every aspect is so abysmal that it’s hard not to laugh throughout the entire film. The biggest standout, however, is Ice Cube’s horrendous performance as the lead character. He sounds like he’s reading directly from the script the whole time, and there’s absolutely no emotion in any of his dialogue or actions. This is especially amusing when emotional beats are meant to occur in the film because his deadpan reactions to the horrific events completely undermines the tension that the film is trying to create. The visual effects are baffling as well, since the CGI is incredibly rough and some of it looks like video game graphics from decades ago. Overall, there’s nothing in this film that actually works, so the whole experience becomes a laughable train wreck that perfectly demonstrates what poor filmmaking looks like.
Although War of the Worlds is one of the worst films I’ve ever seen, I highly recommend it to people who enjoy watching terrible movies. It offers such an fun experience due to the overwhelming amount of failures in every aspect of the film, and it ends up being unintentionally funnier than many comedies, so seeing this movie with a group of people can be incredibly entertaining.
War of the Worlds is currently available to stream on Prime Video. Click here to watch the Official Trailer.
