“You see how this looks, right?”
On his personal quest to punish child predators, TV presenter Chris Hansen creates a show to lure them in and capture their arrests on camera after interrogating them when they’re caught. As his program becomes increasingly popular and moves to the primetime slot, Hansen’s ego only continues to grow, and he becomes obsessed with catching a high-profile predator in order to increase his show’s ratings.
Far from being a traditional biopic, this film frees itself from the limitations of rigidly following historical events in order to present the truth of their circumstances in a more effective manner. As a result, the narrative becomes highly compelling with its surrealist components and interwoven storylines that highlight the problematic elements of Hansen’s show and the people who made it. Robert Pattinson gives a phenomenal performance as Hansen that perfectly reflects his mannerisms and ways of speaking, and the supporting cast (especially Merritt Wever and Skyler Gisondo) are incredible as well. The overall presentation of the film’s story is done so well that the increasing tension throughout the narrative remains very riveting even for those who are familiar with actual events that occurred two decades ago.
I recommend Primetime to anyone interested in seeing a critical glimpse into the production of the popular yet controversial TV show “To Catch a Predator”. It’s a fascinating and gripping thriller that really leans into its dream-like visual style to tell a thematically complex story in a very unique way.
Primetime is now playing in theaters. Click here to watch the Official Trailer.
