Will’s Watchlist (1/10/25)

Nosferatu (2024)

Directed by Robert Eggers
[Rated R] 2hr 12min

Nosferatu is a horror film that adapts the 1922 silent film of the same name. It takes place in 19th century Germany and follows an estate agent who travels to a secluded castle in Transylvania in order to sell an abandoned house to his mysterious client. Meanwhile, strange things start happening to his wife in Germany as a dark presence begins to grow in their town.

This is an incredibly chilling film perfectly encapsulates the terrifying aspects of the original while also updating it with modern filmmaking techniques. It effectively creates its frightening atmosphere by utilizing German expressionist elements in the cinematography, lighting, and art direction. While the overall aesthetic isn’t entirely similar to the 1922 film, it does incorporate those elements into Robert Eggers’ distinctive style extremely well, thus creating a new and unique experience for the familiar story. The acting is also excellent all around and aids in making the supernatural aspects feel very believable. With its impeccable dark tone and compelling characters, this version of the Dracula story is easily among the best, along with the original Nosferatu film.

Nosferatu is not a movie for everyone, as it can be quite unsettling and graphic at times, but I highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys arthouse and period horror films such as The Witch (2015) and The Lighthouse (2019), two other excellent movies by Eggers. Since the foreboding atmosphere is such a significant part of the film that is enhanced by movie theaters, it’s definitely worth watching at one for the best possible experience.

Nosferatu is now playing in theaters. Click here to watch the Official Trailer.
