Marty Supreme is an epic sports drama about a young table tennis player who has high aspirations of being officially recognized the best player in the world. As he strives to achieve his dreams at any cost, his actions negatively affect those around him and snowball into far greater problems that become additional obstacles he must overcome in order for him to get what he wants.

This film is a masterclass in effectively portraying unlikable characters. The entire cast is incredible, especially Timothée Chalamet, who gives his career best performance after an already impressive filmography. Even though his character clearly isn’t a good person, Chalamet’s nuanced portrayal provides moments of sympathy that allows the audience to still root for him in some capacity. This is also reinforced by all the terrible people around him since they’re just as bad if not worse than him. The narrative itself has many twists and turns that keep it highly engaging as they further add to the utter chaos of the overall story. This film is a wild ride that continues to evolve as it progresses while perfectly balancing its thrilling and comedic moments.

I highly recommend Marty Supreme to anyone who enjoys anxiety-inducing films, fascinating character studies about problematic people, and especially Josh Safdie’s other work such as Uncut Gems (2019) and Good Time (2017). This movie is a nonstop stressful journey with some pretty awful individuals and wild situations that all culminate into one of the strongest film endings of the year.
