Dune: Part 2 (2024)

Directed by Denis Villeneuve
[Rated PG-13] 2hr 46min
★★★½

Dune: Part 2 is a sci-fi film that picks up directly where Dune (2021) left off as Paul Atreides continues his journey on the planet of Arrakis. Meanwhile, the opposing political factions begin carrying out their plans to seize control over the planet in order to gain and maintain power.

This is a seamless continuation of the first film’s story. It successfully delivers on previously established plot threads and develops them further as new events occur. However, this also causes the film to be predictable and somewhat unsatisfying, as it mostly focuses on Paul’s journey and leaves little room for developing the political aspects of the larger narrative. As a result, the story feels a little hollow and loses some of the sublime atmosphere that the previous film had. Nevertheless, the excellent technical elements, such as cinematography and sound design, still make for an incredible theatrical experience that shouldn’t be missed.

Despite its shortcomings, Dune: Part 2 is a must watch for fans of the first film. Anyone who enjoys sci-fi movies and hasn’t seen Dune (2021) should definitely give it a watch and experience the sequel in theaters.

Dune: Part 2 releases in theaters today, and Dune (2021) is currently available to stream on Max. Click here to watch the Official Trailer.
