Longlegs (2024)

Directed by Oz Perkins
[Rated R] 1hr 41min
★★½

Longlegs is a horror crime thriller about the FBI tracking down a serial killer who mysteriously murders entire families without leaving a trace. The story follows a new FBI agent who makes major discoveries in the case due to her intuitive abilities, and she uncovers disturbing truths about the murders and the connections they share.

The overall concept and presentation of this film is highly unique and intriguing, but the narrative also incorporates many familiar elements that have already been done more effectively in other movies. Despite its distinctive and authentic visual styles, the film’s story can seem relatively generic at times. The narrative feels emotionally detached, and it doesn’t develop strong connections with any of the characters either. However, the film’s greatest strength is the ominous and unsettling atmosphere it creates through the pacing and cinematography. This effectively develops and maintains feelings of dread and anxiety throughout the first half of the film, so it’s consistently creepy without being overtly frightening. This unfortunately fades for the rest of the movie, but the outstanding performances from Maika Monroe and Nicolas Cage keep the film engaging by making their characters fully believable.

Although Longlegs isn’t an exceptional horror film, I still recommend it to people who enjoy horror movies and are interested in a unique take on familiar elements. It won’t be scary for everyone, but it’s still worth checking out for the eerie atmosphere and excellent performances.
