Weapons (2025)
Directed by Zach Cregger
[Rated R] 2hr 8min
★★★★

Weapons is a mystery horror film about a sudden overnight disappearance of children from a single elementary school class, with only one child and the teacher remaining. The residents of the town cope with their situation in many different ways as some try to uncover what exactly happened that night.
This is a unique horror film that effectively utilizes comedic elements without becoming an outright comedy. It builds an incredible dark and mysterious atmosphere that strengthens the weight of the narrative, yet it still manages to diffuse the tension with humor in certain moments that maximize the effectiveness and enjoyability of those scenes. The film’s non-linear narrative structure also contributes to this, as it explores multiples perspectives of the same events, which can completely change how those events are perceived. Another highlight of the film is the acting, as all the performances are excellent including the child actors, and Julia Garner in particular is incredibly compelling in her role as the teacher. Overall, the film’s fascinating story and unique style create an exceptional experience that incorporates its elements in creative ways that have never really been done before.
I recommend Weapons to anyone who enjoys unconventional horror movies, especially Cregger’s previous film, Barbarian (2022). With its unsettling scares and humorous moments, this film is very entertaining to watch with others at the theater.
