“You’ve got no idea what you’ve got there in your hands”
Based on the video game franchise of the same name, Resident Evil follows a frustrated medical courier who accepts a high paying request to take a mystery package to a lab in Raccoon City. However, he eventually finds himself involved in increasingly disturbing situations as he tries to fulfill his job while dealing with personal issues at the same time.
Not only does this film strikes a fantastic balance between its horrific and comedic elements, but it also feels very much like experiencing a video game. The excellent visual effects make the creatures look terrifying, and the hilarious situations that occur throughout the film effectively release the tension in creative ways. Since the overall execution is very reminiscent playing a video game, it feels authentic to its original source material while also portraying a completely new story. In addition, the film utilizes key elements from the survival horror genre and effectively adjusts them to better fit the format of a movie, so it simultaneously offers a fresh take on the series and remains faithful to the core elements of the franchise.
I recommend Resident Evil to anyone who enjoys humorous horror movies, especially Zach Cregger’s previous work. While this film definitely contains more comedy than his others, it’s still very much in line with his usual style and works perfectly for this type of movie. Overall, the film provides an incredibly entertaining experience that is easily worth seeing on the big screen.
