Warfare (2025)
Directed by Ray Mendoza & Alex Garland
[Rated R] 1hr 35min

Warfare is an action war film based on a real event that occurred in 2006 Iraq and is directed by one of the soldiers who personally experienced it. The story begins when a Navy SEAL team covertly infiltrates a civilian residence in order to set up their operations and spy on the locals. Chaos erupts when they suddenly come under fire, instantly turning their situation from a jovial excursion into a traumatic fight for survival.

This film is a horrific nightmare playing out in real time. Aside from the two brief opening scenes that set up the narrative, the rest of the film occurs during one extended sequence that accurately depicts the conflict as it took place. It’s an incredibly riveting 90 minutes that gets increasingly gruesome and harrowing as the soldiers and civilians around them suffer through the terrible conditions of a war forced upon them by the US government. As a result, the film effectively dismantles the idealization of soldiers by directly showcasing the horrible reality of armed combat and never glorifying their actions. In addition, the exceptional sound design greatly enhances the experience by creating an intense and authentic soundscape that is constantly gripping and barely leaves any room to breathe. Paired with the fantastic visual effects and cinematography, this film provides a powerful depiction of war and its consequences for everyone directly involved with the conflict.

I highly recommend Warfare to anyone interested in seeing a genuine, historically accurate portrayal of soldiers in combat. The film holds nothing back as it offers an unencumbered view of true events, and it uses its excellent filmmaking to create an incredible experience that’s worth watching in a theater.
