“When all else fails, you hit ’em with the truth. You know, the hard truth. Just bang, bang, bang! Whoo! Whoo!”
When the negligence of a powerful oil company owner causes a massive ice shelf to drift into the ocean towards Europe, he colludes with the president of the United States in order to limit public information and control the narrative about the impending disaster rather than work towards finding a viable solution to prevent it from causing countless deaths.
This movie is absolutely insane in all the best ways. Whenever it seems like the overall story and its themes can be fully grasped, the narrative then takes unexpected turns and frames the events in completely different ways. There are so many layers of complexity in this film, yet it’s still able to effectively convey a simple and compelling message by the end. Along with its brilliant commentary, one of the other main contributors in making this an effective story is the exceptional acting. Not only does Tom Cruise give a fantastic performance as the titular character, but the rest of the supporting cast is also incredible, especially Riz Ahmed. In addition, the production design for every single set is amazing, and it does some very creative things to really enhance the film’s unique style of storytelling.
I highly recommend Digger to anyone who wants to see a completely original film with wildly unexpected plot developments and strong, relevant themes that perfectly encapsulate many prevalent elements in contemporary media and media criticism. This is a movie that really challenges its audience to think critically about the purpose of art as a whole but also provides a very entertaining experience along the way.
